In a plot twist that feels like a sci-fi movie, Europe is shaking off the chains of Starlink. You know, the satellite service run by everyone’s favorite Twitter-loving billionaire, Elon Musk. Why? Because relying on an American service can feel like playing a game of Jenga, and Europe doesn’t wanna be the one to pull the wrong block.

As quoted by Christophe Grudler, a French member of the European Parliament, “If you put all your eggs in an American basket, it will not be good for Italy.” Imagine waking up one day, only to find that Musk decided Italy should have a WiFi blackout. Yikes! Talk about a bad hair day for internet connectivity.

In the wake of the Ukraine and Russia situation, it’s clear Europe wants to build its own backbone, and possible hero Eutelsat might just fit the bill—but only if they get their hands on some serious cash. Billions of dollars, to be precise.

So, will Europe step up and create a WiFi fairy godmother for its citizens, or remain forever shackled to the whims of Musk? The clock is ticking and the future of internet privacy hangs delicately in the balance. Will they find the funding and make connectivity more secure, or remain in the shadow of Starlink? One thing’s for sure: this is one reality show worth bingeing.
